Collaborative eResearch environments – “eSciDoc Days” provide extensive information

Max Planck Digital Library (MPDL) and FIZ Karlsruhe – Leibniz Institute for Information Infrastructure will present the 4th eSciDoc Days on October 26 and 27, 2011 in Berlin, Germany / Topics include: sustainable management of research data, provision of a publishing environment for research results / Target groups: scientists, information experts in libraries and data centers, and software developers.
Thumb Karlsruhe, October 2011 – eSciDoc is an open source eResearch environment that has been developed by the Max Planck Digital Library (MPDL) and FIZ Karlsruhe – Leibniz Institute for Information Infrastructure to provide applications and services based on a shared infrastructure for managing research and publication data together with the related metadata, relations and access rights. For the 4th time, the two organizations hold the eSciDoc days, a two-day conference that will provide extensive information about collaborative eResearch environments and related challenges. Topics to be addressed are the sustainable management of a growing amount of data throughout the research process and the provision of a publishing environment for research results together with research data. Scientists in research organizations and academic institutions, information experts and software developers will discuss the latest developments in building digital information infrastructures. Keynote speaker at this year‘s eSciDoc Days is Simon Hodson, Programme Manager at JISC (UK) for Managing Research Data. Addressing challenges, opportunities and benefits, he will share his expertise in promoting and supporting good data management and data sharing in higher education and research. The first day will give a general overview of eSciDoc and its growing community as well as the basic services and customized applications. On the second day there will be a track with three focal topic sessions: “Infrastructure Projects”, “Research Data Management” and “eSciDoc ‒ Getting started”. These sessions will provide progress reports with up-to-date information and talks with practical relevance giving a comprehensive introduction to eSciDoc and various applications. Two additional “hands-on” tracks with comprehensive tutorials will give participants with technical background the opportunity to familiarize themselves with installing the eSciDoc Infrastructure and developing their own individual eSciDoc Applications. Of course, there will also be room to discuss future developments and project ideas with experts from the MPDL and FIZ Karlsruhe. The program for the eSiDoc Days 2011 is available at https://www.escidoc.org/ About eSciDoc eSciDoc is an eResearch environment developed specifically for the global and interdisciplinary collaboration of scientific communities. It comprises a generic, discipline-independent infrastructure and customized applications that enable inno¬vative eResearch scenarios. Scientists, librarians, and soft¬ware developers can work with research data, create novel forms of publications, and establish new ways of scientific col¬laboration. eSciDoc is intended to ensure open and persistent access to research results and materials of scientific institutions and re¬search organizations like the Max Planck Society. The MPDL provides services to help MPS researchers manage their scientific information workflow. Such services comprise the provision of actual content and of technical solutions, but also the support to users by acting as a centre of competence and a community facilitator in the domain of scientific information management. This is achieved through close collaboration with the Max Planck Institutes and their libraries. The core activities of the MPDL lie in building up infrastructures and tools for publications and research data. A substantial task of the MPDL is to provide most effective access to scientific information and fostering the Open Access policy of the Max Planck Society. www.mpdl.mpg.de
