Munich/Berlin/Paris/Milan, 17/03/2016 – Long-distance mobility provider FlixBus expands its international network to Spain and the UK. On March 24, the green buses will run non-stop from London to France twice daily. From March 31, new FlixBuses will link Barcelona directly to France and Italy. With one transfer, travelers have access to Europe’s most extensive network. Direct connections to Central Europe are coming soon. Launched in 2013, FlixBus is with 20 million passengers in 2015 meanwhile the leading long distance bus provider in Europe.
Access to Europe’s most extensive bus network
André Schwämmlein, FlixBus founder and Managing Director: “The new cross-border routes from Barcelona and London are our first step into new markets. New connections in Spain and direct links from the UK to Germany, Benelux or CEE countries are coming soon. Travelers benefit from green, affordable mobility and the best service.” By adding Barcelona and London to the green network, FlixBus now offers 100.000 daily connections to 800 destinations in 18 countries.
Disrupting the market - From German startup to European player
FlixBus was founded 2013 in Germany, after the deregulation of the national market. Due to an innovative business model and cooperation with regional bus companies, FlixBus was able to run a nationwide network within months of its launch. André Schwämmlein: “By combining entrepreneurial spirit and innovative technology with a traditional SME industry, we established a completely new means of transport. We simply made buses cool again.” In 2015, as the clear market leader in Germany, FlixBus started to globalise its business model by launching domestic networks in France, the Netherlands and Italy as well as cross-border service to Scandinavia. In 2016, the former startup plans to expand to Central and Eastern Europe, to the UK and Spain. From the headquarters in Munich, Berlin, Paris, Zagreb and Milan, FlixBus is now operating green buses in 18 European countries and transported around 20 million passengers last year. The globalisation is backed by US growth investor General Atlantic.
“Traveling as easy as possible”
Fares from €5 include free Wi-Fi, power outlets, a guaranteed seat on one of the new buses with Air-conditioning and extra legroom. Online cancellation or rebooking is free of charge and is possible up to 15 minutes before departure. Tickets are available on the FlixBus-Website, the mobile app, in cooperating travel agencies or FlixBus ticket shops. Bettina Engert (FlixBus spokesperson): “Spontaneous travelers can get their FlixBus ticket directly from the bus driver, if there are free seats available. But they have to pay the standard price.” With the free FlixBus mobile app for iOS, Windows and Android, customers can check available routes and travel information about their trip, book their ticket and use the navigation tool to find their point of departure. By using real-time GPS tracker, the FlixBus team can locate each of the green buses and estimate delays. André Schwämmlein: “We want to make traveling as easy as possible. Therefore we invest in new technology in order to continually improve our service.”
One vision: Making Europe green
Bettina Engert: “Buses are the most efficient and climate-friendly means of transport.
