Preserving values for over 2000 years - with gold

1993 in Trier, one of the most important Roman cities on German soil: During construction work for a hospital, it suddenly sparkled in the overburden. A few gold coins came to light during the excavation. The find became bigger and bigger during closer research. A total of 2650 Roman gold coins lay hidden in what was once a bronze cauldron and tied up in leather for almost 2000 years.

The bridge to today is not only the gold itself, which is as beautiful to look at today as it was almost 2000 years ago. The reason why the gold, which was probably intended for pay and/or garrison expenses, was buried was probably a pandemic. For around 170 BC, the plague, also known as the Antonine Plague, was rampant throughout the country. The administrator probably wanted to escape the disease but taking the gold with him would have been too dangerous.

After all, it is 18.5 kilograms of gold (just under ten million euros), which was also a huge value at the time. It is interesting that the purchasing power has remained approximately, as well as the gold coins. Who at that time had a promissory note, a house or an ox as property, everything is lost. Only the equivalent value of gold and silver remained. Investors today should always keep this in mind. Gold stands against the devaluation of money and can, for example, freeze the payment for work, thus maintaining purchasing power. In addition to physical gold, which offers this store of value, investors who are a little more willing to take risks can also go chasing returns, namely with the shares of companies with gold projects. Incidentally, the gold find from Trier can be seen in the Rheinisches Landesmuseum in Trier. An attempt in 2019 to steal the coins was just thwarted by the police, so everyone can continue to enjoy the sight.
