Mixed mood at the PDAC

Von Swiss Resource Capital AG

At the world's most important mining trade show, the Prospectors and Developers Association in Toronto, the mood is partly one of concern.

Thumb

Investors are concerned about rising inflation, a looming recession and economic policy. On the one hand, prices for various commodities are high because of supply chain problems, rising demand and the effects of war. On the other hand, the current performance of the stock market is testing investor confidence. Research director and head of mining studies at S&P Global, Mark Ferguson laid out in a presentation at PDAC that exploration budgets have increased significantly. These have exceeded $11.2 billion in 2021. Exploration funding, on the other hand, has not grown as much. So even though there are funding issues right now, the market capitalization for the mining sector as a whole is increasing. This year, Ferguson said, mining budgets will be up five to 15 percent. The main driver here, he said, is gold and copper exploration.

Nicky Shiels of MKS PAMP sees investor focus on gold. She expects more money to be pulled out of energy and into gold. That's because gold's appeal as a hedge against inflation is growing. Price-wise, however, it is difficult to forecast, she said, because the future price of gold depends largely on what the Fed's actions will be to suppress inflation. When prices are cheap, as gold is currently being pushed down in price by a firm U.S. dollar and rising bond yields, take the opportunity to look at companies like Osisko Gold Royalties or Empress Royalty. As royalty companies, both offer diversification.

Empress Royalty - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ObOa2BGw5MM - has silver and gold investments in Peru, Canada and Mexico.

Osisko Gold Royalties - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtYSi4SouAE&t=19s -has more than 160 royalty and precious metal acceptances in its portfolio.
