Decarbonization and opportunities for investors

Von Swiss Resource Capital AG

According to the European Green Deal, the goal for 2050 is a climate-neutral Europe.

Thumb

Fossil fuels must therefore be reduced. The measures are clear, renewable energy sources such as wind power, solar energy and geothermal energy must be brought in. Electromobility and also hydrogen technology are part of this. Not to be forgotten is decarbonization in the building sector. Many people who currently heat with oil are wondering what they will use for heating when oil-only heating systems are no longer allowed to be installed from 2026. Compared with other sectors, the German energy industry produced the most energy-related greenhouse gases in 2021. Compared to 1990, CO2 emissions have decreased by almost 40 percent. However, there is still a long way to go before we achieve neutrality.

Raw materials needed for decarbonization are on the one hand the battery raw materials, on the other hand also the uranium. Lithium-ion batteries contain nickel, lithium, cobalt, and other raw materials such as phosphate or vanadium, in various concentrations and forms. This puts the focus of investors on companies that concentrate on urgently needed raw materials for achieving the net zero CO2 targets.

This definitely includes Green Shift Commodities with its Berlin project in Colombia. Nickel, phosphate, vanadium, and uranium are the raw materials in the project, as is neodymium, a substance from the rare earths sector. Neodymium is used, for example, in electric motors and in wind turbines because of its magnetic effect. This is because it is associated with an increase in efficiency.

In addition, there are companies that focus more on one battery raw material, such as Targa Exploration https://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/targa-exploration-corp/ -. Currently, the focus is on exploration work on the two prospective lithium projects in Quebec and Manitoba. Lithium is a key element in batteries for electric vehicles.
