Copper and the deficit

Von Swiss Resource Capital AG

Analysts forecast a strong deficit in the copper concentrate from 2025.

Thumb

From 2025 to 2027 in particular, copper concentrate will be in short supply on the global market. Asian smelters are ramping up their capacities, and there is a shortage of suitable mining projects. China will expand its smelting capacity by an estimated 2.6 million tons in the coming years, according to analyst Craig Lang of consulting firm CRU. Indonesia will also see an expansion of its smelting capacity (about 725,000 tons). Currently, there is a global surplus of copper concentrate, it will be about 240,000 tons this year and 243,000 tons next year, according to CRU.

But then there is a deficit that will reach about 595,000 tons in 2026. Another data provider, SMM, projects a deficit of an estimated 150,000 tons in 2025. The main copper consumer is China, and smelting capacity there will increase, with imports of refined copper roughly halving by 2025.

According to SMM, demand for copper cathodes in China is expected to increase by 2.4 percent this year. At the same time, global copper consumption will go up by 2.9 percent to an estimated 25.2 million tons, it said. Copper is used primarily in electrical engineering and is part of electromobility and renewable energy. Global demand for copper is expected to increase massively in the future.

Copper enables many modern technologies, and the importance of the metal will increase even more in the 21st century thanks to megacities and mobility. Companies that also have copper (along with gold, which is not to be sneezed at) in their projects should be well positioned. These include Torq Resources and GoldMining.

Torq Resources' - https://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/torq-resources-inc/ - projects are located in Chile, such as the Santa Cecilia gold-copper project.

GoldMining - https://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/goldmining-inc/ - owns gold and gold-copper projects in North and South America, as well as a large block of shares in Gold Royalty.
