Innovative feature for professional searches

FIZ Karlsruhe – Leibniz Institute for information Infrastructure has developed a unique numeric property search feature for 55 physical and chemical properties/enhanced search precision and a larger bandwidth of relevant hits
Thumb Karlsruhe, Germany – June, 2012 —FIZ Karlsruhe has developed an innovative search function that adds significant value to Thomson Reuters’s renowned patent database Derwent World Patents Index® (DWPISM). This enhanced version of DWPI is available only through STN International, the leading online service for research and patent information. The new unique feature enables patent specialists to search for the numeric values of 55 physical and chemical properties, found in database records from all over the world. The system recognizes 90 additional units which are normalized to base units, as well as about 1,800 spelling variants. Thus, the information in DWPI is even better accessible and can therefore be used more efficiently. A special asset is the search for ranges. For example, a search for a temperature in Kelvin units will also retrieve documents with the corresponding value in degrees Celsius or degrees Fahrenheit, i.e. a search for “10-20 Kelvin” will also find hits quoted in the text as “from -260°C to -235°C”. A search for square meters will also retrieve documents with values quoted in square inches. “Our unique numerical search feature is a considerable value-add to our patent databases,” says Dr. Rainer Stuike-Prill, Vice President Marketing & Sales at FIZ Karlsruhe. “We already use it successfully in other patent files on STN. The data volumes are growing faster and faster. We strive to support our customers by enabling them to retrieve more precise and more relevant hits.” “We are delighted that FIZ Karlsruhe is offering STN users this new feature using DWPI data,” commented Rob Adams, Senior Director at Thomson Reuters. “These enhancements make searching even more effective and underscore the value of the DWPI database.” Created in 1963, the Thomson Reuters DWPI database allows professionals to more easily research the world’s innovations through editorially enhanced English-language abstracting and indexing of patent documents from 47 patent issuing authorities worldwide, including patent data from Asia-Pacific, Europe, the Middle East and North and South America. DWPI contains more than 22 million unique inventions covering 48 million individual patents, and it is used globally by thousands of organizations and 36 patent offices, making it the world’s most trusted and authoritative patent database. The intellectual value of DWPI is the result of a thorough editorial process of classification, abstracting, and indexing. Original titles and abstracts are rewritten to reveal the actual invention and highlight the main uses and advantages of the technology. The enhanced version of DWPI was presented at the PIUG 2012 Annual Conference, an international conference for patent information professionals held in Denver, Colorado, last month. About STN International STN® International (www.stn-international.de), the premium online service in science and patent information, provides access to nearly 200 databases from renowned producers.
