Gold investors should not be disappointed

A price of USD 1,800 per troy ounce of gold is an important mark and the gold price is not far from it. Currently, a weak US dollar is supporting the price of the precious metal. Also, the announced resignation of Bundesbank President Weidmann seems to have had a positive effect on the gold price. This is because Weidmann always tended towards a more restrictive monetary policy. With a successor, one expects a less hawkish stance. Experts, such as those at Commerzbank, expect the European Central Bank to stick to its expansionary monetary policy for some time to come.

This in turn supports the gold price. On closer inspection, the price of gold has not performed so badly. Despite tighter Fed expectations, higher yields and competition from other asset classes, the price of the precious metal has managed to retain a certain strength. Compared to the US dollar, gold performed better than many G10 currencies.

Central banks continue to buy gold, for example Poland and Russia, and physical demand from, for example, the important gold consumer country India has also shown strength in the current year. Gold imports, for example, were 30 percent higher in the year to September 2021 compared to 2019. So physical gold demand has recovered from the Corona shock.
