No green future without lithium

Von Swiss Resource Capital AG

Lithium demand continues to rise due to the increase in electric vehicles, but energy storage also needs lithium.

Thumb

More and more wind and solar energy is being generated, so more and more storage media are needed. These batteries only work with lithium, and that will remain the case for some time to come. Even though there are always new inventions and approaches. For example, young Finnish engineers tinkered with the first sand battery. They placed around 100 tons of building sand in a silo and heated it to 500 degrees Celsius in the summer using renewable energy. This could be used to heat offices or apartments. The sand stores the heat for several months, even until the Finnish winter.

In addition, there are attempts to produce batteries without lithium, so-called bio-batteries. They are supposed to function with the help of bacteria and be able to generate energy to power devices. It will be a long time before there are commercially viable energy storage systems without lithium. Especially in the current situation, where there is a fear for sufficient energy supply that is also as affordable as possible, the change away from fossil fuels to renewable energy will be more demanded and promoted. So electric vehicle and battery manufacturers will continue to look for lithium suppliers. For investors, lithium companies that are well positioned, with compelling projects, experienced management, and this in mining-friendly regions, still offer good return opportunities. Alpha Lithium or Cypress Development come to mind.
