A look at the battery market and lithium

Von Swiss Resource Capital AG

The focus is on the growing number of electric vehicles, the raw material lithium and sustainability.

Thumb

Demand for lithium-ion batteries is on the rise, with particularly powerful batteries in demand. According to the current "Battery Monitor 2022" by TH Aachen and management consultants Roland Berger, global production could reach six to nine terawatt hours. The main factor in the decarbonization of transport and the path to renewable energies are lithium-ion batteries. The "Battery Monitor 2022", which has just been published in its second edition, takes a stand on sustainability, technology performance, competitiveness and innovation. The materials needed for lithium-ion batteries account for about 60 to 70 percent of the costs. Battery manufacturers tend to buy mining companies, for example, in order to be supplied with the necessary raw materials. Particular attention is being paid to the supply of raw materials such as lithium. Environmental considerations are becoming increasingly important in the production of these raw materials. The same applies to recycling, not least due to tighter CO2 regulations.

The energy density of lithium-ion batteries has improved significantly over the years, by a factor of about eight. It is clear that this is increasing acceptance among buyers. In this area, Li-Metal - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5ztywPWxCg -, for example, is working on lithium metal anodes and lithium metal technologies. A pilot plant operated by the company in New York has been steadily increasing production since it began work. Next-generation battery anode technologies will be available for Li-Metal to supply to its customers. With the increase in battery-powered devices and electromobility, battery packs and thus the lithium they contain are taking off.

Lithium, for example, is held by ION Energy - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjwOXrwMIYY - in the lithium salars of Mongolia. Two high-grade lithium projects in a mining-friendly country should help the company succeed.
