Growing demand for platinum group metals and cobalt

Von Swiss Resource Capital AG

Platinum and palladium are raw materials that are used in the automotive industry in particular.

Thumb

Jewelry, catalytic converters or laboratory equipment need platinum metals. The word platinum comes from the Spanish word platina, a diminutive form of silver. In the past, platinum was considered silver's little brother and was simply discarded when gold was panned. Today, they are valuable metals. Platinum is used primarily in the construction of automotive catalytic converters for diesel engines. Palladium is used in gasoline engines for catalytic converters. Since palladium is currently much more expensive than platinum, substitution effects from palladium to platinum are likely to take place. An emerging application for platinum today is in so-called electrolysers, which are used to produce hydrogen.

Analysts, such as Trevor Raymond, CEO of the World Platinum Investment Council, forecast growing industrial and investor demand as well as a supply shortfall, especially for catalysts as well. There is also an increase in demand from China. Platinum, palladium and gold are also produced by Sibanye-Stillwater - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWzGp8QJW9Y - in the USA and Africa. The company is also focusing on battery metals.

Another metal that is an inseparable part of the clean future is cobalt. Around half of global cobalt production goes to the battery industry. At the same time, the electrification of many sectors is a trend that is gaining momentum. By 2040, it is estimated that electric vehicles could account for up to 70 percent of the total. Rising cobalt demand, which could quadruple by 2030, is widely assumed. Still problematic is the fact that much of the cobalt comes from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

For poor countries like Congo, cobalt is obviously a significant opportunity as a source of revenue. However, cobalt should be mined in safe and environmentally friendly mines, moreover without child labor.

But cobalt is also available in Finland, for example, at Mawson Gold's - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thGDYl1Ml7A - Rajapalot gold-cobalt project. This has a very promising initial preliminary economic assessment. Mawson Gold has other rights and interests in gold projects in Australia and Sweden.
