Sven Kruse – physio punk of top German sports

"I've never been satisfied with what I know," says Sven Kruse, one who sees boundaries as opportunities. And one who doesn't shy away from throwing himself over the common path. He is not just any physiotherapist, but a physio-punk who deliberately breaks with traditional norms.

Thumb

For more than 25 years, Sven Kruse has been working for Germany's top athletes. He is one of the most sought-after experts in Germany. And he is the one who has treated the most Olympic champions to date. In other words, he is already something of a sports medicine legend in his own lifetime. No matter where he is, the expert always tries to rethink physiotherapy: Rebellious. Provocative. A physio punk in the best sense of the word.

It was that way from the beginning of his training, when he brought his experience as a strength athlete to the care and training of athletes. And it remained his mantra after he dove deeper and deeper into the world of professional sports as a trained physiotherapist specializing in sports physiotherapy.

He trained sports physiotherapists for the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB). Once a year, he looks after Germany's top athletes in the "Club of the Best". For years, he also headed the medical department of the Iserlohn Roosters ice hockey club. Kruse is ambitious, committed, alert and always willing to stand up for what moves him. And he is a visionary and forward thinker who never rests on what he knows or has achieved.

His hobbyhorse is the subject of fascia. Kruse is one of a group of biologists, medical doctors, pain researchers and physical therapists who treat and research the fibrous collagen network in the body. The physiotherapist shares his knowledge on this subject during international lecture tours around the world and in practical seminars as a lecturer.

In doing so, the pressure that comes with a commitment to professional sports has always inspired the physical therapist. "I often found out from the newspaper which player had to be ready for action again and when, and then had to figure out how to get him fit on time," Kruse explains. This pressure spurred him to keep reinventing himself. This includes thinking outside the box, questioning things, going his own way, being inconvenient. And if necessary, even developing his own tools to achieve the goal.

Kruse's reputation precedes him. The physiotherapist shrugs off the fact that some people reverently call him a miracle worker. Not only athletes, but also celebrities and politicians appreciate his meticulous approach. "I read with my hands and my eyes," says Kruse about his way of working. You can never see everything in an MRI or an X-ray. The expert feels and assesses on the body. "Where others just look at a picture of a car, I do a test drive," he says with a smile. He won't say who exactly he has helped. That's just the way Sven Kruse is.

When the physio punk "crunches" through the tissue landscapes with the "Kruser," a fascia tool he developed, he loosens adhesions that the patient has often not even experienced as pain points. Yet they restrict movement. "Evasive movements, poorer technique and susceptibility to injury occur," the expert knows. In professional sports, a knockout criterion.

But it's not just professional athletes who benefit from Sven Kruse's expertise. "A cleanly gliding and restriction-free fascial connective tissue is essential for a pain-free everyday life," says Kruse. Lack of movement and incorrect loads, as well as stress, cause the fascia to stick together, resulting in tension and pain. Regular, light fascia training can work wonders against this. Which new ways one can go thereby, is topic of Kruse's next book. Nothing else would be expected from this physio rebel, who prefers to wear a Viking beard instead of a mohawk.
