Rare earths are urgently needed for the energy transition

Von Swiss Resource Capital AG

In wind turbines, electric motors or Led lamps, rare earths ensure efficiency.

Thumb

An electric car, for example, contains up to three kilograms of rare earths. An offshore wind turbine consumes around 300 kilograms. Smartphones, permanent magnets and alloys also rely on rare earths. The same applies to many everyday objects such as speakers, headphones or hard drives. In the automotive industry, these metals ensure greater fuel efficiency in combustion engines. Around half of global production comes from China. Russia and Brazil also have the largest reserves. This brings us back to dependencies, not only in Europe but also in the USA. In fact, rare earths are not as rare as their name suggests. Deposits are suspected in various European countries. In any case, a reduction of dependence on autocratic states would be desirable. Recently, rare earths were found in Sweden, but this should not be enough for independence in Europe.

Rare earth metals include 17 elements. Mining them is not easy. Recently, a project in Spain was stopped. On the one hand, the Iberian fox would have been endangered, and on the other, local residents are afraid of contamination of the rare earths, i.e. of possible radioactive material. What the rare earths can do can be seen, for example, with neodymium. Using this metal, magnets can lift about 1,300 times their own weight.

One company that owns neodymium in the ground, among others, is Green Shift Commodities -https://www.commodity-tv.com/play/green-shift-commodities-expands-its-portfolio-with-acquisition-of-the-rio-negro-lithium-project/ -. The company focuses on raw materials for decarbonization and achieving net zero CO2 targets. The Berlin project in Colombia contains nickel, vanadium, phosphates, uranium and rare earths. Recently, Green Shift Commodities acquired the Rio Negro project in Argentina. This contains the coveted lithium for lithium-ion batteries.

Two rare earth projects are also owned by US Critical Metals - https://www.commodity-tv.com/play/mining-newsflash-with-chesapeake-gold-us-critical-metals-and-tinone-resources/ - (Montana and Idaho), along with a lithium project (Nevada), a cobalt project and a uranium project.
