Gold - versatile

Time and again, germs and deadly bacteria that are difficult to control are a problem. Now, ground-breaking research could provide a remedy. Multi-resistant "superbugs" appear to be losing their terror thanks to gold-based compounds. In one study, 84 percent of the compounds proved effective in treating them. Gold, or rather the compounds known as gold (III) complexes, developed potent activity against the bacteria. By 2050, it is estimated that about ten million people will die from drug-resistant germs, unless the right approach to antibiotics is now found, and here's what it looks like.

Gold is also increasingly being used in the technology sector. According to the World Gold Council, it currently accounts for only around seven percent of the global world market, but the trend is upward. Investors and central banks love gold because of its value storage and diversification function. Just how much was seen last year in the record-high purchases by central banks. This trend should continue this year, according to the World Gold Council. For gold producers, high gold prices are of course very pleasing. It should be noted, however, that rising gold prices are arriving at gold explorers with a lag. Gold prices are now above the US$2,000 per troy ounce mark. Whether gold will continue to rise in price or rather take a breather again depends very much on the Fed's interest rate decisions. For investors, it is always advisable to be invested in gold and gold shares.
