Boomtown Kartong:

... is also known as Kartung and a multi-ethnic village community consisting largely of Mandinka, followed by Jola and other minority tribes such as Karoninka and Balanta. The village had about 5,500 inhabitants in 2013. In the last 10 years, the population has grown by around 25%. More and more Europeans have also succumbed to the region's charm, with Dutch, British and Germans settling here. Kartong is located around 60 kilometres from the capital Banjul and is one of the smallest and oldest settlements in the region.

By chance, the authors came across Kurumbo Lodge, which is run by a Dutch woman: families with children are just as welcome here as nature and hiking enthusiasts. Due to the size of the lodge's property, target groups do not get in each other's way. The well thought-out concept of Dutchwoman Ria Rugge promises very good utilisation of the lodge in the future - and more nature and environmental protection for endangered areas in the Gambia / Senegal border triangle.

Kurumbo Eco Lodge is located in the middle of a beautiful and densely wooded area, right on the Halahin River. This is completely navigable, but there is virtually no movement along the course of the river. Rowers, kayakers or even anglers could feel transported back to the early 19th century here, so peaceful is the landscape and far removed from the sounds of civilisation. Kurumbo Lodge offers great round trips on the Halahin River or fishing trips. The river is very rich in fish and species. Hundreds of bird species have found their paradise along the Halahin River.

The Gambia is also a favourite place for bird watching as there are many sanctuaries and reserves that provide a variety of habitats for birds. The diversity of birdlife in The Gambia makes it an attractive destination for ornithologists and nature lovers. When it comes to the plants of The Gambia, the well-known biologist Dr Penney says that one can only marvel at their diversity and beauty, especially during the rainy season. Over 1,000 plant species - trees, shrubs, herbs and grasses - have been recorded. Many are slow and hard to miss, but others require a keen (and interested) eye. Apart from the native species, there are over 100 species of mammals - over thirty species of bat alone. Most other species are rodents, carnivores and ungulates (animals with horns). Many animals are nocturnal and secretive, including the tiny bushbaby.

Children can stay for free in their parents' room. The prices for food and drinks can also be described as favourable by international standards.
