The environmentally friendly KURUMBO LODGE is situated on this marvellous river
The smallest country in Africa is officially called 'The Republic of The Gambia' and is located in West Africa. The flight distance is slightly longer than that of the Canary Islands. It takes just over 6 hours to fly from Europe to Banjul. With the exception of its west coast on the Atlantic Ocean, The Gambia is completely surrounded by the much larger Senegal. The extensive river landscapes of the Halahin and Gambia Rivers are particularly attractive. The landscapes are rich in species and promise true adventures for nature lovers. Kartong in the south of the country is the mouth of the Halahin River, and the fauna and flora are breathtaking. Sun is shining all days from a deep blue sky ... since the end of October until the end of June.
Boomtown Kartong:
... is also known as Kartung and a multi-ethnic village community consisting largely of Mandinka, followed by Jola and other minority tribes such as Karoninka and Balanta. The village had about 5,500 inhabitants in 2013. In the last 10 years, the population has grown by around 25%. More and more Europeans have also succumbed to the region's charm, with Dutch, British and Germans settling here. Kartong is located around 60 kilometres from the capital Banjul and is one of the smallest and oldest settlements in the region.
River cruises: can be booked by Kurumbo Lodge guests
The Halahin River, which borders the huge property of Kurumbo Lodge, is a paradise for water sports enthusiasts and nature lovers
Nature lovers, families with children and sports enthusiasts are very welcome at Kartong's most child-friendly eco-lodge:
Kurumbo Lodge guests and their kids find a huge adventure playground and a safe garden
Families with children don't have it easy in some regions of West Africa. There is even a trend to advertise "ADULTS ONLY". By chance, the authors came across Kurumbo Lodge, which is run by a Dutch woman: families with children are just as welcome here as nature and hiking enthusiasts. Due to the size of the lodge's property, target groups do not get in each other's way. The well thought-out concept of Dutchwoman Ria Rugge promises very good utilisation of the lodge in the future - and more nature and environmental protection for endangered areas in the Gambia / Senegal border triangle.
Kurumbo Eco Lodge on the Halahin River in Kartong:
Ebb and flow also determine the course of the Halahin River.
Incredible biodiversity and an absolutely relaxing atmosphere make Kurumbo Lodge a great lodge for those who have children and appreciate the beauty of nature. Kayak tours on the river are very popular with young and old...
The dedicated lodge operator Ria Rugge: "We appeal to all nice holidaymakers and travellers. Hikers, birdwatchers and families come to us. The children of our lodge visitors also feel right at home here and parents can sit back and relax, because the kids are having a great time here and are simply happy." Ria continues her explanation: "Children are very welcome here and their parents too, of course. There's a huge playground for kids, which entices them to go on real adventures."
Lodge specialities include kayak excursions, fishing trips and Halahin river cruises on the Kurumbo Lodge boat:
An adventure for families and birds lovers: Kurumbo Lodge river cruises
Kurumbo Eco Lodge is located in the middle of a beautiful and densely wooded area, right on the Halahin River. This is completely navigable, but there is virtually no movement along the course of the river. Rowers, kayakers or even anglers could feel transported back to the early 19th century here, so peaceful is the landscape and far removed from the sounds of civilisation. Kurumbo Lodge offers great round trips on the Halahin River or fishing trips. The river is very rich in fish and species. Hundreds of bird species have found their paradise along the Halahin River.
Hundreds of (partly even endemic) bird and fish species:
The Gambia is also a favourite place for bird watching as there are many sanctuaries and reserves that provide a variety of habitats for birds. The diversity of birdlife in The Gambia makes it an attractive destination for ornithologists and nature lovers. A visit to the Halahin River is also a great opportunity for biologists and anglers to take a closer look at Africa's exciting biodiversity.
The diversity and beauty of nature in The Gambia:
Kurumbo Lodge ... pure nature and directly on the beautiful and deserted Halahin River
When it comes to the plants of The Gambia, the well-known biologist Dr Penney says that one can only marvel at their diversity and beauty, especially during the rainy season. Over 1,000 plant species - trees, shrubs, herbs and grasses - have been recorded. Many are slow and hard to miss, but others require a keen (and interested) eye. Apart from the native species, there are over 100 species of mammals - over thirty species of bat alone. Most other species are rodents, carnivores and ungulates (animals with horns). Many animals are nocturnal and secretive, including the tiny bushbaby.
Kurumbo Lodge visitor Fatou: "The round hut is lovely decorated and offers a very comfy bed and bathroom."
Family-friendly accommodation rates at Kartong's Kurumbo Lodge:
Kurumbo Lodge playground: a paradise for kids and parents are also happy if kids are smiling
